They all run one agent on one task. None of them keep the team.

Codex, Claude Code, Cowork, ChatGPT Work, OpenClaw, Hermes, Grok Bot: sharp at a sitting, or at a box, or at a bot on one account. The layer that stays alive between sittings is the whole product.

I keep getting the same question dressed as a comparison.

"Why wouldn't I just use Codex." "We already have Claude Code." "Cowork." "ChatGPT Work." "I self-host OpenClaw." "Hermes is a board." "Grok Bot is right there."

Yes. Use them. They are good.

They are good at one agent on one task, or one account's bots. That is a sitting. A sitting is not a team.

Octopus is the layer that is still there when the sitting ends.

What each of them is actually for

Codex. Parallel coding tasks in clouds you can throw away. A factory. Not Clerk. Not an invoice lane.

Claude Code. The deepest coding agent. Everything is a session. Maker might live there. Mail should not.

Cowork. Isolated session, then the sandbox dies. Correct for a clean room. Wrong for Thursday.

ChatGPT Work. One agent, one artifact: doc, sheet, app. Ship the thing. Do not move into the window.

OpenClaw. Strong self-hosted personal runtime. If you love the box, run the box. A business still needs a desk.

Hermes. Closest native agent kanban, single-host on purpose. You are on-call for the host.

Grok Bot. Fast, personal, one account's bots. Great when you are the only user. Not a shop, not a shared backlog, not a cost desk.

None of that is a dunk. It is a map. People get hurt when they take a sitting tool and ask it to be staff.

What none of them keep alive

Say it as a list you can audit.

A named team. Chief, Clerk, Mail, Maker, Scout, Watch. Jobs you can fire. Not a thread called "ops."

A board. Backlog, Needs you, In flight, Done. Shared. Still there at 7 a.m.

Costs. Per run, which brain, whether the brief was fat. Not a surprise API weather report, not a usage email you open when something feels wrong.

Email. Each teammate has an address. Replies come back to the one who started the thread.

Fallback. Plan runs dry, another account or another provider continues mid-task. You do not wait for a reset. You do not rerun the fat prompt from zero.

A computer that is ready. Not a sandbox you boot. Not a host you babysit unless you chose that life.

Approvals. Send, spend, guess: park it. Vault for keys. Dedicated workspace. We never train on your data.

That bundle is the ops layer. Extra tabs do not qualify. Dying sessions do not qualify. Unrelated terminals do not qualify.

An AI teammate is still an agent. The contract is the difference: a job, memory, an address, a stop rule. The four checks.

Fair, not smug

I use session tools. I want Codex to chew a pile. I want Claude Code in a repo. I want Cowork when the folder is messy. I want Work when the artifact is the point. I want a personal runtime when I am playing. I want Grok Bot when I am the only one in the room.

I do not want any of them to be the invoice system.

Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index had 82% of leaders expecting digital labor to stretch capacity. Anthropic 2026 had 57% of orgs on multi-stage workflows and only 16% crossing teams. The missing middle is not a better model. The missing middle is a place the models can share work without you pasting.

$99 is OSS models, the computer, the board. Bring the plan you already pay for. No per-task markup. Stack accounts. Seven-day money-back. Dedicated VM for agencies: talk to us.

A Tuesday with both

Morning: Clerk already drafted the late invoices. Three sit in Needs you. Mail sorted overnight. Maker's calendar is waiting. You tap.

Afternoon: you open Claude Code or Codex because the actual work is a repo. You open Work or Cowork because the artifact is a doc. You might even poke Grok Bot because you are the only one in the room and you want a fast take.

Evening: you close those windows. The board is still there. Watch still has a card. The computer is still on. Nothing important lived only in the sitting.

That is the product. Not a better chat. A shop the chats can empty into.

It cannot do judgment, relationships, showing up in person, or taste. It will not replace the hire who can walk into a room. It will replace the lane that hire would have been bored to death by.

Use the sitting tools to make the thing. Use Octopus to keep the team. If a vendor tells you those are the same product, ask where the unpaid invoice lives when the window is closed. If they point at a transcript, you have your answer.

Straight answers

Are you saying those tools are bad?
No. They are good at sittings, repos, sandboxes, parallel clouds, personal runtimes, and bots. We do not replace that. We keep the shop those sittings empty into.
Can I bring those models into Octopus?
Bring ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok. Work runs on your plan. No per-task markup. Or use OSS models in the $99. Maker might still open Claude Code for a repo. Clerk should not.
What is the short version of the product?
AI teammates with a computer. A board. Approvals. Own email. A vault. Dedicated workspace, we never train. Seven-day money-back. Dedicated VM for agencies: talk to us.
