Cowork is a clean room. Then the room gets thrown away.
An isolated session is a gift when you want a sandbox. It is a problem when the job has to exist on Thursday. Lanes, a backlog, and costs should outlive the sandbox.

Cowork is honest about what it is, if you listen.
You get a session. It is isolated. You do the work in a box that will not leak all over the rest of your life. Then the box goes away. That is a feature. I want that for a messy analysis, a one-off rewrite, a "try this folder and do not touch production."
The mistake is moving in.
A shop needs the opposite of a thrown-away room. It needs lanes that still exist. A backlog that does not care you closed the tab. A cost line you can read on Friday for work that ran on Wednesday. People. Well. Teammates with names.
Why the sandbox should die
If you are touching a pile of files you do not fully trust, isolation is manners.
If you are experimenting, you want a room you can burn.
If you are shipping one artifact, you want the session to end so you are not haunted by a half-agent that still has the folder mounted.
Cowork is built for that shape. ChatGPT Work is the same family on the other side of the street: one agent, one artifact. Claude Code is the deeper coding cousin, still a session. None of these are insults. Session is a product category. It is allowed to be good.
What dies with the sandbox:
- The implicit memory of how you did it
- The queue of follow-ups
- The chance for another teammate to pick up a card
- The cost of the sitting, unless you go hunting
If invoices live in that room, invoices die with the room. That is a bad place for invoices.
What should stay alive
Lanes. "Weekdays at 9, unpaid over 14 days, draft, stop before send." That sentence should not need a new session to exist.
Backlog. Work that is not started yet. Work that is waiting on you. Work that is done. A board, not a transcript.
Costs. Which brain, which run, whether it was fat. If the sandbox ate the receipt, you will not notice Scout rereading the same export until the plan feels tight.
An address. Mail has an inbox. Clerk can be handed a card. You are not pasting between windows to simulate a team.
That is the ops layer. Not extra tabs. Not a pile of terminals.
Anthropic's own 2026 snapshot is almost a joke in this context: 57% of orgs on multi-stage workflows, 16% crossing teams. Cowork will help you with a stage. It will not, by itself, be the crossing. Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index had 82% of leaders expecting digital labor to stretch the workforce. Stretching means the labor is still there after you close the clean room.
Compose, do not replace
A useful Tuesday:
You open Cowork to tear apart a messy vendor folder and produce a clean list. Good.
You hand that list to Clerk as the chase list. Clerk already has the tone rules. Bell & Rowe is always late. First nudge never CCs legal. Stops before send.
You do not re-enter Cowork on Thursday to remember the process. The process is the job.
Maker can still use Claude when the writing has to be good. Clerk can sit on a cheaper brain. You bring the Claude plan you already pay for, or you use OSS in the $99. Computer, board, approvals, vault, own email. Stack accounts, fallback mid-task. Dedicated workspace, never train, seven-day money-back. Dedicated VM for agencies: talk to us.
Cowork stays the clean room. Octopus stays the floor the room opens onto.
What you will miss when the room is gone
You will miss the list of exceptions you negotiated in the session. Bell & Rowe is late, first nudge is short, never CC legal. If that only lived in the sandbox, Thursday you are a founder re-teaching a new room.
You will miss the queue. Cowork does not owe you three follow-ups that were not the original ask. A board does.
You will miss the cost of the sitting. Isolation is great at hiding how fat the brief got. Then the plan feels tight and you do not know which experiment ate it.
You will miss an address. A clean room does not receive the vendor's reply. Mail does, if Mail has a mailbox.
None of that is a knock on isolation. Isolation did its job. You asked it to also be memory, a queue, a receipt, and an inbox. That is four extra jobs. Hire them.
It still cannot do judgment, relationships, showing up in person, or taste. Neither can a sandbox. You keep those. The software is only allowed to forget the sitting, not the shop.
If you love the isolation, keep it. If you need Thursday, hire Thursday. Claude Code is the version of this argument inside a repo.
Straight answers
- Is Cowork worse than a teammate?
- No. It is better at a contained sitting. Isolation is the feature. It is worse at being Clerk next Tuesday, because next Tuesday the sandbox is gone.
- Can I keep files from a Cowork session?
- Take the artifact with you. That is the point of a session tool. Then give the repeating steps to a teammate so you are not reopening a dead room to remember the process.
- Can Claude still be the brain on Octopus?
- Yes. Bring the plan you already pay for. No per-task markup. Or use OSS models in the $99. Maker might still want Claude. Clerk often does not need it.
